PROSPECTIVENESS AS A CONSTITUENT OF THE CATEGORY OF FUTURALITY IN CONTEMPORARY FRENCH

Abstract

The aim of the investigation under consideration is to differentiate between the two language phenomena – futurality and prospectiveness. The object of the study is the category of prospectiveness in contemporary French as a constituent of the macrocategory of futurality. The subject of the given research is the aspectual, temporal and modal peculiarities of the category under investigation in contemporary French. Linguistic means of the French language, conveying prospectiveness, are found at different levels of language and perform cognitive-communicative function, the meaning of which lies in the reference of the utterance to reality on the grounds of the presence of the type of relation between the subject and the object of speech in the current reality. Apart from the tenses mentioned above, the modal verbs which transfer various types of meanings, referring to the future, can be ranked among prospective ones. Prospectiveness is the notion connected with a definite situation in the future, placed by the speaker within the context of consequences and prerequisites. The semantics of prospectiveness presupposes formation or presence of prerequisites at the moment of speaking, which are to carry consequences in the future. The algorithm of prospectiveness includes the stage reflecting the spatiotemporal image of the nearest future, the result of which is the projection into the future by means of the metaphoric image of “move” and spatiotemporal landmarks. Time stages of preparation for getting involved into new situation are connected with intent or wish, are referred to as future directivity, as a goal, which is the move to the future, or as a time location near the end point, target. In the course of the study, it has been found out that prospectiveness makes an integral part of the category of futurality relevant to behavior characteristics. The prospective modality semantics is closely connected with the processual state of the future action formation. As a text category, prospection denotes semantic future prospect regarding the text comprehension moment. The given category is one of the narrative devices allowing the reader to gain an insight into the author’s prospective logics. The major prospectiveness exponents in contemporary French are the motion verbs and grammar periphrases, able to introduce the idea of action trend to get into new situation. Prospectiveness is a typological category marked by interlingual, interlevel and interclass nature of formal language means in contemporary French. Prospectiveness is characterized by high cognitive potential due to its ability to explain conceptual origins of insight into the stage of action which is about to take place. Intent is the major semantic component of the category of prospectiveness and it has several semantic representations in contemporary French. Prospectiveness has the form of dynamic structure in language, the linguistic components of it are the perspective of several stages prior to entry into action and due to the speaker’s intent. It has been concluded that aspectual and modal action characteristics prevail in the conceptual structure of the category of prospectiveness, whereas temporal and modal ones – in the conceptual structure of macrocategory of prospectiveness, still these phenomena interchange in micro and macrocontexts.
