The relevance of the research is due to the need to study Gogol's individual style in the image of space as a reflection of the Russian mentality.

The purpose of the article is to separate the specifics of the image of space on the formal and content sides, to identify the dominant content aspects of space and the linguistic means of their representation.

The object of analysis in the article is the description of space in three passages of the poem. The subject of the description was the various filling of space with objects and the tropes and figures of speech involved in its description.

The article discusses the features of Gogol's individual style in the description of space and the linguistic means of its expression.

The content aspects of the description of space by Gogol include: 1) the mention of distant and near space, the capital and the province; 2) a description of the relief, the landowner's house, the structure of his estate, the log huts of peasants, etc .; 3) the image of space is created by describing the poor condition of Russian roads,  by using the nightly description of the Korobochka’s courtyard, which allows us to conclude that there are poor communication between the villages and poor equipment of the roads. In the descriptions of the space a negative assessment of the depicted things, arising from the description of the details of the noble estate, the actions of the charioteer and the organization of life in the noble estate, is perceptible. The description of space is often the starting point for thinking about the lifestyle of Russians from ordinary people to nobles, about their mentality.

Linguistic means of expressing space include detailing, introducing a wider background for describing space, mentioning numbers, pleonasm, oxymoron, attribution, non-standard metaphor, non-standard comparison, using of verbs, transformation of mood..

Of the special language tools, Gogol uses a metaphor (only one log was watched everywhere) and comparisons (the day was either not clear, or gloomy, but some kind of light gray color, which happens only on the old uniforms of garrison soldiers, this, however, peaceful army but partly drunk on Sundays). Gogol’s metaphor is unusual because it transfers a person’s property to an object (at first glance, this is a metaphor), however, the basis of the transfer is the adjacency of the beholder and the object of action (in fact, the log cannot look, it is adjacent to the subject of the action). The comparison used by Gogol is non-standard, since it is unusual to compare the colors of the sky and the uniforms of soldiers.

The results of this research can be used in the study of language and culture science, rhetoric, and stylistics.
