Abstract

Development and functioning of modal verbs is very important topic for research. Modal verbs are used by the English-speaking people quite often, while in Ukrainian language we can find certain correspondences, but the grammatical construction of suggestion has certain differences that need to be researched. A considerable contribution to the study of category of modality was made by such scientists as S. Balli, О. I. Belyaeva, V. V. Vinogradov, Z. K. Dolgopolova, L.  S. Ermolaeva, G. О. Zolotova, F. Palmer, V. Z. Panfilov and others. However the phenomenon of modality still remains a research object for many linguists, because modal verbs and constructions are considered as one of the most contradictory lexico-grammatical categories and attract researchers’ attention.

The aim of the research in this article is clarification of concept of modality and research of features how to use ways of modality expression and modal verbal constructions in English on the basis of popular psychological internet blog by Eric Barker.

The analysis of scientific literature on this problem specifies that interpretation of category of modality is extraordinarily wide. However linguists are inclined to consider that the category of modality has two types of logic and grammatical connections: the connection of sentence meaning  to objective reality and speaker’s attitude to meaning of the sentence. The first type of connection is called "objective modality", the second is considered as a form of expression and called "subjective modality". During the analysis of functions of modal verbs in English and important aspects of their translation into Ukrainian, it is possible to come to the conclusion, that modality is inalienable part of popular scientific discourse, because it represents speaker’s attitude toward reality. Morphologically modal verbs are called insufficient, semantically they mean neither action nor state, unlike ordinary verbs, but at the same time they are the means of expression of modal values of different kinds of emotions. A modal verb in the context of one text can have different functions. In translation of the text that contains modal verbs, it is very important to convey modality, otherwise the meaning of the sentence and its content will be incomplete. The problem of translation of modal verbs remains perspective for further research.
